Mathematics
At Boyare Primary School, Mathematics is a focal learning area and a subject of strength and passion for many of our students. Lessons are delivered in a variety of ways including hands-on learning activities, games, and specific maths resources catering for the need at different levels. Boyare Primary students are supported in the journey to achieve their best and work hard every day to develop fluency in their skills, understanding and knowledge across all learning strands – Number & Algebra, Statistics & Probability and Measurement & Geometry.
Our whole school program is Top Ten Maths, with a focus on the explicit teaching, modelling, and scaffolding of Mathematics vocabulary and effective mental strategies. Teachers promote word problem solving to encourage real-world application of skills and regularly review concepts to promote consolidation and transference of knowledge to students’ long-term memory.
There are several extension opportunities throughout the school year. Top students (identified through PAT testing) participate in extension Mathematics lessons, and some are selected to participate in the annual Australian Mathematics Competition.
All students practise year level Mental Maths at least three times a week and have access to several extension opportunities throughout the school year.
